Experience

I'm and Associate Adjunct Professor at a NY SUNY college on Long Island. I've been teaching Portfolio and Career (Industry Prep) courses as well as Advertising & Marketing for over ten years. I also own a marketing successful company. Prior to being a college professor, I had a long and very successful career in advertising and publishing. But before I graduated, I took a summer and studied design and typography in Italy and Switzerland. I studied with the renowned Swiss graphic designer Armin Hofmann, in Zurich and Milan. Upon graduating, I launched my career by starting a design firm called Tarragon Graphics. I had three partners (two were heads of the graphic design department of my college). After a year, I knew I needed more out of my career and landed a job at the second largest business press publishing company in the country (in Cleveland, Ohio). After one year, I was made VP Creative Director and was charged with overseeing the design and creative for over 35 magazines and managed a staff of over 100 art directors, production artists, writers, and production people. I was only 24. After 5 years, I decided I needed to “move to higher ground:” New York. After about a month of portfolio planning, resume writing, and applying for jobs, I landed a job as VP Creative Director and a small ad agency on Long Island. It was definitely a smaller position, but I wanted to move from publishing to advertising. After 5 years, and helping to build it up to the largest ad agency on the island, I left to start my own. After about 10 years, my partners and I had built our agency up to being one of the largest and most highly respected NY ad agency with offices on Long Island, in NYC and on the west coast. After 20 years we were ranked in the top 20 high-tech agencies in the country by PC Magazine. Many of our clients were based in Silicon Valley. Our client list was made up of many of the largest, well-known, and most respected brands in the country. My partners and I also built a second company that created online marketing systems for Fortune 500 companies. It was very successful and afforded me to retire in 2006. But after a year or so, I couldn’t stay away for the industry and I was also too young to retire. At that point was fortunate enough to be hired by the college to teach and I also started a small marketing consulting business, which I still have. However, three years ago, I was asked to join with another “marketing guru” to start a larger marketing company, which we run together today. So, I've been a creative director and commercial director for 45 years and I believe that I’m uniquely qualified to help art students looking to get into a great college art program or a graphic designer, soon to graduate from college, revitalize or improve their portfolios. I have review hundreds and hundreds of portfolios over the years. I have hired hundreds of graphic designers, artists, photographers, production arts, digital and social media talents as well. I know what schools and companies are looking for in a high school or college graduate's portfolio and resume (I teach resume building as well). This experience gives me the ability to quickly assess and make suggestions that will definitely improve those items and give students or job seekers the best chance for success and to standout above their competition. Which is the number one goal in both cases. I have helped many college students get internships and even full-time jobs. I offer this service because I love teaching and helping creative talents. It’s an extremely competitive world out there. Everyone can use advice, and guidance from a seasoned professional. I have always sought out that type of advice for myself and trust me, it can make all the difference in the world.
